1. Question 4:
Who would be the audience for your media product?
Preliminary Task:
My preliminary task is based on a character in a mental institution; the
character then escapes adding mystery to the scene. The film would then
continue telling the story of the character and how she escaped and lived etc.
The scene includes the use of medication due to a mental illness. As the
character is refrained from moving, and speaks in a different language the
audience automatically become afraid, and try to subconsciously, disconnect
with the personality of the character.
If the scene were to develop it could become a scary film with the protagonist
being a mass murderer. I would award the film a certification of 15 years and
above. I believe this is a good certification, as the audience are old enough to
understand that the character is mentally disturbed. A young audience could
become too scared and not understand the narrative of the film.
I have chosen this certificate as I feel this age group will find the narrative
appealing. (The idea of a patient escaping from a mental home, via a straight
jacket). The ideas for the escape are virtually impossible tasks. The
suggestion that the impossible becomes possible adds a large amount of
curiosity hanging over the audiences mind.
The music has a modern, up-beat, tempo and style appealing to the young
audience but the names of the character (Sandra) is more appealing to an
older more mature audience as they subconsciously build a relationship with
the character as they want to understand how such a normal name can be so
abnormal.
Any body younger than this may find the scenes too scary, making the film
less successful in general.
Main Task:
If the film were to have a high certification then a large age demographic
would miss out on the film, making the film loose money. By having a age
certificate for people of a young age is also a bad move as a low rating would
make the film more restricted as well as possibly changing the narrative.
I feel that a certificate of 15 years and above would be best for the main task.
It reaches a wide demographic, targeting teenagers who can understand the
storyline more easily. Audience members above this age will also be able to
build a relationship with the characters as they will try to understand how the
characters mind is working and also feel empathy for the young female
character.
